The Austrian Federal Law on Animal Welfare, prepared jointly by the Federal Chancellery, the Ministry of Health Affairs and the Ministry of Agriculture, is a comprehensive legal document on animal welfare and entered into force as of 1 January 2005. Animal welfare is an important concern for the Ministry of Life. Since the late 1980ies, that is, long before Austria’s accession to the European Union, the switch to, and the introduction of, particularly species-compatible ways of animal keeping have received enhanced, targeted support within the framework of agricultural investment aids.
